NEHA Research Grant

The NEHA research grant, awarded to one recipient each February, provides up to $1,250 to one active member each year to help them meet the costs of travel and research at archives, libraries, museums, parks, and other historical sites.

Applications for the 2025 grant should be submitted to Tona Hangen, the Executive Secretary (neha.execsec@gmail.com) by November 1, 2024 for consideration.

Eligibility
1. All active members, who have been members for at least four years, except current members of the Board of Directors, are eligible to apply. Contact NEHA Executive Secretary at neha.execsec@gmail.com if you need confirmation of past membership.
2. Active membership means members who have paid their dues, have participated in conferences (giving papers or chairing/commenting on panels), served as local host of conferences, contributed to NEHA News (book reviews, etc.), served on committees, or held office in NEHA.
3. Prior grant recipients are ineligible.

Criteria
Any valid academic research that requires the applicant to travel to access relevant materials (including public history projects).

Grant Use
Grants can be used for travel expenses (airfare, train, gas, parking, etc.) lodging, board, archive/library usage fees, reproductions of documents from archives/libraries, etc. Grants are to be used within the calendar year.

Requirements
1. Recipient must provide evidence of how the funds were used and that the research was completed with 4 months of completing the research trip. Recipients must submit their evidence to the NEHA Executive Secretary.
2. Recipient is to present the initial findings of their research at a NEHA conference within 2 years of conducting the research.
3. Recipient is to acknowledge the grant in any resultant publications.

Application Process and Procedures

A completed application consists of:
1) Application form/cover sheet. NEHA Research Grant Form

2) 500-750 narrative statement describing the research project, why the member needs to travel for research, what the member hopes to accomplish on trip, timeline, where the research trip fits into larger project. Indicate skills needed to conduct research such as foreign language, paleography, digital skills, or oral history.

3) Curriculum Vitae.

4) Budget (total costs of research trip and indicate other potential sources of funding if applicable).
